Market Definition
Sternal closure is commonly used to reduce hemodynamic and respiratory instability in pediatric patients following cardiac surgery, particularly in neonates and infants. Sternal closure or the procedure of sternotomy is performed pre or post-cardiac surgeries. Sternotomy is the common procedure preferred over lateral thoracotomy. The sternal closure procedure also has many
complications such as sternal dehiscence, mediastinitis, deep sternal wound infection (DSWI), and others. To reduce such complications there are many technological developments in the procedures and products are available.
Wiring is the common technique for sternal closure and stainless steel is the common material used in the sternotomy procedure. Wiring is commonly used in the interlocking of the sternum as it is easy to process and a low-cost technique as stainless steel is been used in this technique. As per recent advancements, instead of stainless steel, the alloy of nickel and titanium, nitinol can be used as nitinol is more stable, less corrosive, and more biocompatible than stainless wires; it also results in lower bleeding. Titanium is a widely used material rather than stainless steel as it increases the firmness of the breastbone and reduces the threat of injury to retrosternal tissues.
Middle East and Africa Sternal Closure Systems Market Dynamics
This section deals with understanding the market drivers, advantages, opportunities, restraints, and challenges. All of this is discussed in detail as below:
DRIVERS
- Increasing usage of sternal closures in obese patients
Obesity is a rising concern in the Middle East and Africa region which leads to a wide range of health complications including chronic heart disease, and diabetes among others. The basic cause of obesity is an energy disparity between calories consumed and calories expended. Also, the surge of physical dormancy and consumption of energy-dense foods that are high in fat are major causes leading to obesity. The causes of dehiscence include ischemia, infection, increased abdominal pressure, diabetes, malnutrition, smoking, and obesity.
The growing number of obese patients are highly prone to heart problems. The sternal closure procedure offers more stability and strength to the sternum. Therefore, there has been increased usage of sternal closure procedures in obese patients, driving the market growth.
- Increasing prevalence of the target patient population with the subsequent rise in the number of surgical procedures
Cardio-pulmonary is the target patient population which is increasing due to the increasing incidence of cardiac problems. Cardiac surgery numbers are increasing due to hypertension increase in cholesterol levels. The prevalence of heart problems is leading to an increasing number of cardiac surgeries. Removing and replacing the sternum of the closure is the most common procedure in various cardiac surgeries, which results in boosting the market. Sternal closure techniques are usually performed in an open heart and Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) for proper operative surgical technique. The emergence of COVID-19 has further exaggerated the prevalence of the target patient population as the patients showing symptoms of COVID-19 are found to be prone to CVD and pulmonary abnormalities.
The growing prevalence of heart problems leads to cardiac surgeries. Several cardiac surgeries need removal and replacement of the sternum. Sternal closures are done in open heart surgeries, congenital heart surgery, and surgery for valve disease and coronary heart disease. The increasing incidence of these procedures is driving the growth of the market.
OPPORTUNITY
- Rising technological advancements in sternotomy devices
Technological advancements include enhancing the stability and strength of traditional sternal closure. Traditionally stainless steel material is used widely but due to injuries caused by breaking of steel wire, there was a requirement for some advanced material that can withstand higher tensile pressure. With technological advancement, improved alloys are produced with high tensile strength. Thus, rising technological advancements in sternotomy devices are expected to provide lucrative opportunities for market growth.
RESTRAINT/CHALLENGE
- Limited awareness among healthcare providers about other relevant procedures
Stainless wires are widely used but on the other hand, wires made up of nitinol products are also available. However, less information about the availability of products restricts the growth of the market. Information about sternal closure by cementing is also not available to healthcare providers. Median sternotomy is the most common approach for repeat cardiac surgery despite the potential complications of cardiac injury.
The new technique of use of cannulated screws is done for sternal dehiscence in high-risk patients but the awareness among patients is less regarding its availability and efficiency. Therefore, limited awareness involved with these procedures among healthcare providers is acting as a challenge for the market growth.
Recent Developments
- In August 2022, B. Braun presents its engagement in Africa at the Citizens’ Festival of the Federal President 2022. The company presented how B. Braun promotes access to better healthcare in structurally poorer countries in Africa.
- In March 2022, Péters Surgical participated in the SNITEM symposium on the new MD regulation. The company believes this as a dedication to the new MDR regulation on the medical devices being launched in the market.
