Market Definition
Verteoplasty is a minimally invasive spinal procedure in which bone cement is injected through a small hole in the skin into a fractured vertebra. Vertebroplasty relieves pain caused by compression fractures and stabilises the spine, thereby preventing further spinal dysfunction and improving quality of life. Kyphoplasty, is a type of spinal augmentation for compression fractures. This procedure relieves the pain caused by a vertebral fracture, stabilises the bone, and restores the height of the vertebral body, which has been reduced due to a compression fracture. Bone cement, also known as polymethyl-methacrylate, is injected into the fractured bone via a hollow needle during vertebroplasty.
In kyphoplasty, a balloon is inserted and inflated to expand the compressed vertebrae to their normal height, and then the space is filled with bone cement. Kyphosis is a modern spine surgery procedure used to stabilise vertebral compression fractures caused by osteoporosis, cancer, and other conditions.
Global Vertebroplasty and Kyphoplasty Market Dynamics
Drivers
- Launch of new products
Rising product launches, partnerships, and acquisitions by top market players are expected to boost segment growth. For instance, Medtronic plc launched its Kyphon Assist Directional Cannula in the United States in May 2020 to treat spinal compression fractures caused by osteoporosis, cancer, or benign lesions. As a result, these factors are expected to drive the growth of the kyphoplasty devices in the market.
- Surge in adoption of technologically advanced products
Medical device advancements have allowed for the reconstruction of various equipment, such as Crosstrees Medical, Inc.'s PVA Pod System, a novel bone cement delivery technology that does not require an implanted device in the spine. Medtronic's Khphon bone cement has been available with a new indication for sacral vertebral fracture since June 2018. The use of vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty equipment in the health care industry is increasing due to new applications of existing devices and the development of new devices. This equipment is used to perform various spine surgeries. This is driving the vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty market.
Opportunities
- Rising geriatric population will act as an opportunity
In recent years, the geriatric population has grown. According to the World Health Organization's October 2021 update, one in every six people worldwide is expected to be 60 or older by 2030. At this point, the proportion of the population aged 60 and up is expected to rise from 1 billion in 2020 to 1.4 billion. The world's population of people aged 60 and up is expected to double by 2050. (2.1 billion). The number of people aged 80 and up is expected to triple between 2020 and 2050, reaching 426 million. The most common fractures in osteoporosis patients are vertebral compression fractures, the geriatric population is more prone to osteoporosis. As a result, the market is expected to grow.
Restraints/Challenges
- High cost of treatment
Spinal surgeries are extremely expensive and in some cases, are not covered by insurance. This increases the burden on the patient and family, making it unaffordable for low-income people. In the United States, for instance, the cost of lumbar fusion spine surgery exceeds $45,000, which does not include the costs of imaging, diagnostics, medications, hospital care, and rehabilitation services, among other things.

COVID-19 Impact on the Vertebroplasty and Kyphoplasty Market
COVID-19 has spread throughout the world and has met the epidemiologic criteria for a pandemic. In this terrifying situation, standard medical practise was severely impacted, emphasising the treatment of coronavirus patients. The spine section was completely reorganised to reduce the rate of contamination of medical staff and patients during hospitalisation. The North American Spine Society (NASS) issued a guidance document in April 2020 that included clinical considerations and recommendations for surgeries and procedures classified as emergent, urgent, or elective.
Recent developments
- In April 2022, Nanox announced FDA approval for HealthOST Device, an AI software monitoring vertebral compression fractures and low bone density, which are frequently associated with osteoporosis.
- In August 2020, IZI Medical Products launched a osteo-site vertebral balloon ("Osteo-Site Balloon") for vertebral augmentation. It rounds out IZI's treatment options for vertebral compression fracture (VCF), which also include osteo-site vertebroplasty, osteo-site balloon kyphoplasty, blazer curved needle augmentation, and Kiva PEEK Implant-based augmentation.
- In August 2021, IZI Medical Products, LLC announced the official launch of Vertefix HV Cement. Vertefix HV is a novel technology for vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty procedures that meets the demand for real-time flow visualisation during cement injection. Product introductions are expected to boost market growth.
