Market Definition
The topical skin adhesives (or glues) are liquid cyanoacrylate monomers that polymerize into long solid chains upon contact with blood or a wound surface, thus holding wound edges together. Topical skin adhesives are ideal for simple cuts such as punctures from minimally invasive surgery (for example hair transplantation), skin graft sites, and simple trauma-induced lacerations. However, topical skin adhesives cannot be used on all cuts. They are generally not used on infected or gangrenous wounds and patients with a known hypersensitivity/allergy to cyanoacrylate or formaldehyde. The key benefits of topical skin adhesives include fast and painless procedure, do not leave any hatch marks (unlike sutures and staples), which results in excellent cosmetic outcomes, do not require a follow-up procedure to remove them after their purpose has been achieved — topical skin adhesives simply slough off spontaneously after 5 to 10 days, eliminate the fear and risk of needle sticks, create a moist environment, which provides the optimal condition for wound healing and have antimicrobial features against gram-positive organisms so less risk of wound infection. The growth of the Asia-Pacific topical skin adhesive market is primarily driven by the increasing number of surgical procedures due to accidental injuries.
Asia-Pacific Topical Skin Adhesive Market Dynamics
This section deals with understanding the market drivers, advantages, opportunities, restraints, and challenges. All of this is discussed in detail below:
DRIVERS
- Rising Incidences of Burn Injuries and Skin Diseases
Thermal injuries are physically painful and may leave disabling scars not only on the skin or the body, but also impair psychological well-being. Severe injuries often impose significant psychological, but also educational consequences and social stigmatization. Asian countries, especially high-income countries, had a high burden of inflammatory dermatoses, including acne, alopecia areata, atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, decubitus ulcers, psoriasis, pruritus, and seborrheic dermatitis. The burden of infectious dermatoses was greater in low-income Asian countries. Hence, the rising incidence of burn injuries and skin diseases is expected to drive market growth.
- Growing Expenses on the Development of Healthcare Infrastructure
Infrastructure is a key pillar supporting the fundamental aim of promoting improved standards of care and well-being for all patients, together with a good experience of the healthcare system. In parallel, the healthcare system and staff must support effective health promotion, prevention, and self-care of the whole population. Infrastructure must integrate the hospital, as the center for acute and inpatient care, into the broader healthcare system and should facilitate the seven domains of quality patient experience, effectiveness, efficiency, timeliness, safety, equity, and sustainability. Infrastructure includes the built environment and supporting elements: equipment, access, Information Technology (IT), systems and processes, sustainability initiatives, and staff.
OPPORTUNITY
- Faster Recovery and Restoration
The stiff competition and growing healthcare infrastructure help in providing better skin care, which leads to faster recovery and restoration into normal life. As technology and innovations in healthcare are increasing, people are getting more aware and desire advanced or quick care of their health for treatment and cure. The use of tissue adhesive and adhesive strips for wound closure is now commonplace in many emergency departments, though each has its limitations and practical difficulties. The skin adhesive has numerous potential applications in the medical field either as a patch that can be cut to desired sizes and applied to many tissues including bone, cartilage, tendon, or pleura or as an injectable solution for deeper injuries. The skin adhesive can also be used to attach medical devices to their target structures such as an actuator to support heart function.
RESTRAINT/CHALLENGE
- Lack of Standard Regulatory Guidelines and Non-Favourable Reimbursement Scenario
Even after a company obtains regulatory approval to market a product, the product and the company’s manufacturing processes and quality systems are subjected to continual review by the FDA and other regulatory authorities. The interests and safety of the public must therefore be entrusted to a regulatory body or bodies that ensure that only products in legal trade are available and that marketed products are safe. The regulation of medical products has become increasingly complex with the globalization of product development, production, and supply and the rapid pace of technological and social change in the context of limited financial and human resources. Also, the lack of reimbursement scenarios in developing countries is observed.
Hence, the lack of standard regulatory guidelines and non-favorable reimbursement scenarios for topical skin adhesive products may restrain market growth in the forecast period.
Post-COVID-19 Impact on the Asia-Pacific Topical Skin Adhesive Market
COVID-19 created a negative impact on the Asia-Pacific topical skin adhesive market due to the shutdown of global manufacturing sectors, logistics and transportation, and lack of testing for the product.
The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the market negatively to an extent. However, increasing government support and continuous technological advancement is expected to provide lucrative opportunities for market growth. Moreover, increasing partnerships, acquisitions, and collaboration among market players and the growing awareness of skin adhesive products in the region are expected to further fuel the market growth. Also, the growth was high since the market opened after COVID-19, and it is expected that there would be considerable growth in the sector. The market players are conducting multiple R&D activities to improve the technology involved in the product. With this, the companies will bring advancement and innovation to the market.
