Drivers: GCC Food Safety Testing Market

The major factors driving the growth of this market are rising outbreak of food borne illness, stringent regulations imposed in food industry, increased globalization of food trade, advancements in technology, rising demand of convenience, packaged food products and augmented incidences of outbreaks of chemical contamination in food processing.

RISING OUTBREAK OF FOOD BORNE ILLNESS

Foodborne illness causes infections in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract due to the harmful bacteria, parasites, viruses, or chemicals present in the food or beverages. Vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever and chills are the most common symptoms of foodborne illnesses. Acute foodborne illness occurs unexpectedly and lasts for ashort period of time. Some patients with foodborne illness can be recuperated on their own or without any treatment. Foodborne illnesses rarely lead to serious complications. Its symptoms of are as follows:

  • Diarrhea and/or vomiting are the common symptoms of foodborne illness, which typically last for 1 to 7 days.
  • Abdominal cramps, nausea, fever, joint/back aches and fatigue are the other frequent symptoms observed during illness.

According to an article published by Germany’s Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, (BFR), it was discovered that out of 84 people tested, 73 people were suffering with food borne illness in the year 2012. Furthermore, According to the same article, inadequate hygiene and unsuitable temperature management had caused many food-borne illness outbreaks in the year 2013. WHO stated that countries in European region have reported significant numbers of infections from verocytotoxin bacteria which are producing Escherichia coli O104:H4. This is resulting in a large number of cases of bloody diarrhea and haemolytic uraemic syndrome.

  • According to World Health Organization (WHO), an article reports that children under 5 years of age carry 40.0% of the foodborne disease burden, with 125 000 deaths every year. Diarrhoeal diseases are the most common illnesses due to consumption of contaminated food. It makes 550 million people ill and 230 000 deaths every year.
  • According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are more than 250 foodborne diseases. It reports that about 1 in 6 Americans i.e. 48 million people get sick from a foodborne illness, 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die of foodborne diseases each year.

Food-borne illness is considered to be substantial cause of abridged economic growth across the globe. It has led to morbidity and loss of productivity in many developed nations. The contamination of the food supply with the pathogens and its persistence, growth, multiplication and/or toxin production has gained a lot of prominence in the public health concern. In addition, with surge in the consumer awareness towards the safety of the food, the testing of the food has gained a lot of significance over the past few years. As the testing of food samples have amplified, safe food products have been introduced in the market which has decreased the rate of illness.

STRINGENT REGULATIONS IMPOSED IN FOOD INDUSTRY

Food safety is a scientific study that refers to handling, preparation, and storage of food in numerous ways to prevent food-borne diseases. The occurrence of two or more cases of similar illnesses due to ingestion of a common food is identified as a food-borne disease outbreak. If the common food has led to food borne outbreak, the regulations are strictly applied to constrain the growth of the outbreaks through food. Food is governed by a complexity of laws and regulations by food processing and service industries such as European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF.) These bodies ensure that the food is safe and has adequate quality all across the country. The General Food Law Regulation is implemented as it ensures great level of protection to the human life.

The various stringent regulations which are imposed on food industry are as follows for the European region are:

  • General Food Law (Regulation (EC) No 178/2002) this law imposes general obligations to provide safe food.
  • Regulation (EC) No 852/2004 is imposed on the hygiene of foodstuffs, food businesses.
  • The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) is imposed to transform nation’s food safety system as it helps to shift the focus from responding to foodborne illness to preventing foodborne illness.
  • Regulation (EC) 178/2002, the General Food Law Regulation, lays down definitions, principles, and obligations covering all stages of food/feed production and distribution.
  • EU Regulation No. 2073/2005 is on microbiological criteria for foods. This legislation is for the food testing and to maintain its hygiene.
  • EuroProxima (Art. No. 5091LFER) is applied to test and quantify the concentration of lactoferrin during production and control of the end products by producers as well as controlling agencies.
  • The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulates meat, poultry, and certain processed egg products, whereas the FDA regulates all foods and food ingredients introduced into or offered for sale in interstate commerce.
  • The China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA) are wide-ranging, imposing strict controls and supervision on food production and management. In 2015, it published draft amendments to the implementing Regulations of the Food Safety Law (Implementing Regulations) for public consultation.

The General Food Law Regulation is on the basisof food and feed law. This law sets out an overarching and coherent framework for the development of food and feed legislation both at union and national levels. This law helps to maintain the quality of the food and check the toxic contents in the products which make it safe for consumption. The food manufacturing companies need to follow such laws to launch their product in the market.
