Market Definition
Optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) is a specialised technology for analysing optical light paths and reflection characteristics in optical fibres and components. Unlike OTDR, OFDR operates in the frequency domain with continuous wave (CW) light sources, allowing for higher signal-to-noise ratios. A tuneable laser source sweeps over a specific wavelength band in a typical OFDR system (e.g. 1535nm-1565nm). The light is then transmitted through a fibre and interfered with by a reference arm. The spatial distribution of the reflected light is calculated using the Fourier transformation of the resulting signal.
Global Optical Frequency Domain Reflectometry (OFDR) Market Dynamics
Drivers
- Growing need to closely study hydrogeological process
The use of distributed temperature sensing to monitor temperature patterns in the stream bed in order to determine different zones where groundwater is discharged is also increasing. Distributed temperature sensing also allows for downhole temperature monitoring in order to study hydrogeological processes at high spatial resolution and frequency. The use of these sensors in passive mode for on-site investigation of in-well flow, groundwater flow, or subsurface thermal property estimation is also on the rise. These factors are significantly driving the use of optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR), thereby driving market growth.
- The rapid advancements in networks infrastructures
The availability of smart optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) with robust wireless connectivity options is expanding its application in a variety of industries for qualifying passive optical network (PON) networks and characterising point-to-point access and metro fibre networks. Furthermore, rising demand for fast and secure telecommunications networks is fuelling market growth as a result of widespread adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) technology and increased use of high-end electronic devices. The increased focus on 5G network deployment around the world is expected to drive the market even further.
