Amphotericin B is a polyene antifungal antibiotic which is produced by Streptomyces nodosus. It is used for the treatment of fungal infections in neutropenic patients, cryptococcal meningitis in HIV infection, fungal infections, and leishmaniasis. It acts by stopping the growth of fungi as it binds to ergosterol (an important component of fungal membrane). It further causes depolarization of the membrane and altering cell membrane permeability which leads to leakage of important intracellular components, cell rupture, and results in cell death. It is given by injection into a vein.
