Food scientists who have expertise in food material such as how to re-use food items conducted a great survey on creating such great innovations. The researchers belong to Nanyang Technological Universities which are situated in Singapore. Talking about their discovery, they have made an antibacterial gel bandage using the discarded husks of the popular tropical fruit durian. Southeast Asia being king of fruits has a fruit named, durian which has a thick husk with spiky thorns, and these horns are removed and the sweet flesh surrounding the seeds on the inside is highly considered as a delicacy. A lot of processes are involved and the industries are also benefitting from this discovery as they can maintain a good inventory of them, capture a good market and it will be a great success to launch this product.
The process is extracting high-quality cellulose from the durian husks and combining it with glycerol. We can find waste by-products from the biodiesel and soap industry. The scientists of NTU successfully created a soft gel that is very much similar to silicon sheets and these sheets are soft which is later cut into bandages of various shapes and sizes. These bandages come in all shapes and sizes according to the need of an individual because every person has a different type of shape and structure. The next step is to add organic molecules which are produced from baker’s yeast known as natural yeast phenolics, it makes the bandage deadly to bacteria. In the field of healthcare as well, it has a very good success rate. Pollution is one of the critical concerns of our economy and we need more innovations that emit less pollution. This gel is a zero pollution material.
